Artist's Comments

In my story Heir To The Gallery, there are different types of magi, each of which based around a particular "element". In formal situations, the magi wear emblems of sorts on their garments in order to display what kind of mage they are. So I created the designs for all of the known kinds.

In the upper-left, clockwise from the top, there is Fire, Earth, Water, Air.

In the upper-right, clockwise from the top, there is Light, Plant, Shadow, Life.

In the lower-left, clockwise from the top, there is Metal, Crystal, Ice, Metal.

In the lower-right is Blood.

This was done in POV-Ray, and took a fair amount of work since each emblem had to be done separately. However, the final render took only about 2 minutes, since it's not tremendously complicated overall.

It's a minor part of the story, but I figured I should exercise my aesthetic sense once in a while.

Ummm i'm just wondering where exactly the 3D in this image is?

I think you may have submitted to the wrong gallery...

This isn't 3-d. Isn't there a 2-D category?

I like the life one and the blood one.

The image was rendered in POV-Ray, which is a raytracer engine.

I have other pictures that are done in POV-Ray, or in a raytracer I wrote for a computer graphics class a while back.

It was done in POV-Ray, so it was raytraced. I just turned off all the shadows, because they interfered with the designs.

The wood background is actually the same one I did for pad-on-paper.

Ah yeh that I can understand - however the final product looks more 2d, so one could be mistaken for expecting it to be of 2D creation.

Um...no. You got rid of the third dimension, thus it is 2-d...oh wait, I can see the edges on a few of the emblems, my bad...it is really, really hard to see though...the perspective apears to be in the center.

*nod* If you look closely at some of the emblems farther from the center, you can tell they have some degree of depth.

I plan on creating more pictures using them that will be more obviously 3D, but in this case, I wanted to get a good view of all of their faces.
:iconaxiem:
The camera's at 0,5,0 and is looking at 0,0,0. I have no idea how to do one of the perspective cameras that kills 3Dness, and I really wouldn't want to anyways.

In future things I do with the emblems, their 3Dness should be slightly more obvious.

Hmm...interesting. Are you going to make the individual shapes raised as well? I think that could be interesting on a few of them.

Also, Happy Birthday!
